Review for Social Studies Test- Unit 1

• You will need to study the following vocabulary words:

law- a rule that someone must follow

vote- make a choice about something

community-a place that is made up of many neighborhoods

history- the story of people, events, and places from the past

urban-a city and the places around it

suburb- a city and the places around it (a kind of community)

rural-an area with small communities called towns that are far apart

capital-the place where the leaders of a state work

map- shows where places are

symbols- pictures that stand for things on a map

map key-tells what the symbols on a map mean

• Why should we wear seatbelts? to help keep you safe

• You will need to know your cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west

• You should know the meaning of the words: enormous (big), grinned (smiled), crowd (a lot of people)

• You need to know the steps in solving a problem: 1. Name the problem 2.  Find out more about the problem 3. List ways to solve the problem 4. Talk about the best way to solve the problem 5. Solve the problem 6. Ask: How well is the problem solved?
